Question
A projectile is launched from a 300 m high cliff at an angle of 30? with an initial velocity of 150 m/s. (g=9.8m/s2). Begin by drawing a diagram and determine:
a) The total time of the flight
b) The horizontal velocity of the rocket on impact with the ground.
c) The vertical velocity of the rocket on impact with the ground.
d) The horizontal distance to the impact location from the edge of the cliff
e) Magnitude of the velocity on impact
f) Direction of the velocity on impact (angle with horizontal).
Note: I found many different answers for this question, but I got confused. I need to see the right way to solve this problem.
Explanation / Answer
a) in vertical using h = ut + at^2/2
-300 = 150sin30t - 9.8t^2/2
4.9t^2 - 75t - 300 = 0
solving t = 18.60 sec
b) vx = 150cos30 = 129.90 m/s
c) vy = 150sin30 - 9.8t = - 107.28 m/s
d) d = vx . t = 129.90 x 18.60 =2416.14 m
e) v = sqrt(vx^2 + vy^2) =168.47 m/s
f) direction tan-1 (vy/vx) =39.55 degrees
