Question
Two horizontal parallel wires (length 5 meter, mass = 2.5 grams) are separated by a distance d = 10 mm and they both carry current. The bottom wire is on the ground, and carries a current of 6A in the direction shown. This wire generates a magnetic field B at the location of the second wire (Ignore the Earth%u2019s magnetic field). Determine the value (5 points) and direction of the current I in the top wire (5 points) if this wire is to be held into equilibrium by the magnetic force. Find a location where the total magnetic field generated by both wires is zero (10 points).
Please provide a detailed response....test tomorrow and have been working on this question for an hour with no success! I have been provided the answers but am having trouble getting same.
Explanation / Answer
a. Fg= FB
mg = u0i1i2l/2pR
i2 = 2.5*10^-3*9.8* 2*3.14* 10*10^-3/4pi*10^-7 * 6
i2 = 20.4 A
b. let field be zero at x units from i1
then
i1/x = i2/0.01-x
0.01-x = 3.4x
x= 0.01/4.4
x = 2.2 2mm
