Question

PT 1) A charge +Q and -Q is placed on two very large parallel plates. The permitivity of the space between the plates is e0. How does each of the quantities change as the plates are moved closer together. Explain wtih equations

a) The potential difference between theplates

b) The capacitance of the pair of plates

PT2)

A first capacitor of capacitance C1 is initially charged to a value of Q. Then the first capacitor is then placed in parallel with a second capacitor of capacitance C2.

a) In terms of the initial energy what is the final energy of the system?

Explanation / Answer

PT1) A & B ) V0LTAGE APPLIED , V =Q/C C is capacitance of the plate

and C = A Eo / d where d is distance between plates and A is area of cross section of the plates

so as we decrease the distance between the plates CAPATANCE INCREASES

and POTENCEL DIFFERENCE DICREASES

PT 2) When the two capactor are conected then equivalent capatance will be c = c1 x c2/(c1 + c2)

so energy stored = (1/2)x q^2/c
