Question

A uniform

A uniform, 248-N rod that is 2,11m long carries a 225- N weight at its right end and an unknown weight W toward the left end (see the figure (Figure 1)). When W is placed 457 cm from the left end of the rod, the system just balances horizontally when the fulcrum is located 85,0cm from the right end. Find w. If w is now moved 24.2cm to the right in what direction must the fulcrum be moved to restore balance? If W is now moved 24.2cm to the right how far must the fulcrum be moved to restore balance?

Explanation / Answer

A) w is at .457m from left and flcrum is at .85m from right end

so w is at (2.11-0.457-.85)=0.805m away from fulcrum

for equilibrim,w*0.803=225*.85

w=238.16N

B) let x be a distance of fulcrum from right end

w is moved to right by 0.242 m

from left end w is 0.457+.242 =0.699m till fulcrum

so distance of w from fulcrum is (2.11-.699-x)=(1.411-x)

so for equilibrium (1.411-x)*238.16=225*x

x=0.725m

change in x is (.85-.725=0.125m)

C)and it shifts towards right
