Question

Two hollow metal spheres are mounted on insulating stands. Sphere 1 has a radius r1, and sphere 2 has a radius r2 = 2r1. A charge Q is placed on sphere 1 to give it an electric potential of +168 V. The other sphere is uncharged at a potential of 0 V. If the two spheres are now placed in contact and then separated, what will be their new charges (as fractions of Q) and potentials?

a. 1/3 XQ (Sphere 1) Correect

b. 2/3 XQ (Sphere 1) Correect

c. ..... V (Sphere 1) Need to slove

d. ..... V (Sphere 2) Need to slove

Explanation / Answer

when the contact is removed both spheres will have same potential
if x is charge transferred
(q-x)*k/r1=xk/r2 and since r2=2r1 x=2q/3
=> chargeon 1= q/3
charge on 2=2q/3
potential of 1= q*k/3*r1= 168/3=56 V (since q*k/r1 was 168 V )and potential of 2 is also same as 56 V
