Question
A sphere of mass of m = 1.30 kg is first placed directly on the plate of an electronic scale. The scale shows 12.75 N as the weight of the object. A large beaker containing a liquid with a density of ?liquid = 853 kg/m3 is then placed on the scale and the scale is tared (i.e. zeroed to this weight as a reference point, it has a reading of zero with the beaker on the scale). The sphere, hung by a thin string, is lowered into the liquid and submerges below the surface. ( The scale reads 1.70 N with the sphere not touching the beaker. Calculate the density of the sphere.

Explanation / Answer
1st reading: m*g=12.75
Volume*density*g=12.75
reading 2: weight of liquid displaced=1.70N
volume*density if liquid*g=1.7
Volume=1.7/(g*853)
thus [1.7/(g*853)]*density*g=12.75
solving these density= 6397.5 kg/m^3
