Question

1.) A woman accelerates her motorized scooter down a 10-m-long ramp that starts at a height of 1.4 m. Her speed is just 2.9 m/s at the top of the ramp, but 17 m/s when she gets to the bottom. The total mass of the woman and her scooter is 87 kg. Assuming the sum of all forms of friction can be represented as a constant drag of 53 N, how many joules of work did the scooter motor do as she went down the ramp?

2.) Consider a simple harmonic oscillator that makes 7 complete oscillations in a total time 1.1 s. What is the angular frequency omega (in rad/s) of the oscillator?

Explanation / Answer

1) Total work done by scooter W = Change in PE + change in KE - work done by drag force

W = -mgh + 1/2 * m * (Vf^2 - Vi^2) - 53*10

= -87*10*1.4 + 1/2 * 87 * (289 - 8.41) - 530 = 10.46 KJ

2) T = 1/f = 2i/w => w= 2pi/T = 2pi/ (1.1/7) = 40 rad/s
