Question

This topic is about survivability issues in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). Of special interest is vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication. An example of the information we care about is the BSM info (what is that?) of DSRC Safety Applications (and what is that?). You need to investigate the following issues, starting out with conducting a literature review on DSRC related issues. For the papers you find answer the following questions: 1. Identify the security problems or concerns the paper addresses. 2. Identify the kind of faults that are addressed in the paper, i.e., the fault model. 3. Identify the real-time constraints the research assumes. 4. Identify the security mechanisms assumed in the paper, if any. 5. What other issues do you see that need to be addressed?

Explanation / Answer

VANET - Vehicular Ad-hoc Network

Basically simple definition of VANET is Vehicles Transformed "computers on the wheel " or "networks on the wheels".It is a technology that uses moves cars as nodes in a network to create a mobile network. VANET turns every participating car into a wireless router or node, allowing cars approximately 100 to 300 metres of each other to connect and, in turn, create a network with a wide range.

Vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V ) is the wireless transmission of data between vehicles. The goal of V2V communication is to prevent accidents by allowing vehicles in transit to send position and speed data to one another over an ad-hoc network.

Vehicle-to-Infrasturucture (V2I ) is the wireless exchange of critical safety and operational data between vehicles and highway infrastructure, intended primarily to avoid or mitigate motor vehicle accidents but also to enable a wide range of other safety, mobility, and environmental benefits.

Both V2V and V2I as a major responsibility inn VANET . Ex.As cars fall out of the signal range and drop out of the network, other cars can join in, connecting vehicles to one another so that a mobile Internet is created. It is estimated that the first systems that will integrate this technology are police and fire vehicles to communicate with each other for safety purposes.

BSM - Basic safety measure. Each vehicle broadcasts its core state information in a “Basic Safety Message” (BSM) nominally 10 times/sec.Upon receipt of BSM, vehicle safety host builds model of each neighbor’s trajectory, assesses threat to host vehicle, warns driver (or takes control) if threat becomes acute.

DSRC - Dedicated Short-range communications is a two-way short-to-medium-range wireless communications capability that permits very high data transmission critical in communications-based active safety applications.

Both V2V and V2I are the parts of DSRC .

1.The security problems or concerns the paper addresses are :

lack of resources at the state and local level to deploy and maintain V2I technologies

developing technical standards for interoperability

Developing and managing data security and addressing public perceptions related to privacy

ensuring that drivers respond appropriately to V2I warnings

2. Kind of fault that are addressed in the paper :

The sudden change of the band of set of wheels of a vehicle heavy (such as a truck and/or bus) can introduce a shade zone and consequent loss of signal in the communication between fast vehicle and an increase of distance between vehicles can reduce the power of the signal required in the reception.

3.Real-time constraints the research assumes :

Internet can be a useful productivity tool, it can also prove to be quite distracting, resulting in safety and actually time-wasting concerns.

The Internet can be tempting and can distract users from the road like Checking emails, surfing the web or even watching YouTube videos can engross drivers and lead to accidents.

Similarly, while drivers may have the opportunity to do work while on the road, they also may use this opportunity to engage in other leisurely tasks, such as VoIP with family, watch news highlights or listen to podcasts.

4. Security mechanism

Need reliable and secureness and should have authentication framewirks

5. Other issues that need to be addressed :

Prior to safety of the devices installed in the vehicles should have Digital signature so that it can be controlled by any third party.

And device should be all weather resistance so that its operation is continuous.
