Question

A) There is an object which is suspected to be one of the following: i) a gray glass disk, ii) a polarizing plate, iii) a plate of ¼, iv) a plate of ½. How could you identify it? B) The refractive indexes of quartz and calcite are no = 1.544, ne = 1.553 and no = 1.658, ne = 1.486, respectively. Would a ¼ calcite plate be expected to be thicker than a quartz? Why? C) A left-polarized beam of o = 5893 Å is normally incident on a calcite plate of / 2 for which no = 1.65836 and n = 1.48641. Calculate the thickness of the plate and show that the emerging beam has right-circular polarization.

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

A) There is an object which is suspected to be one of the following: i) a gray glass disk, ii) a polarizing plate, iii) a plate of ¼, iv) a plate of ½.

This can be identified by using an instrument which works at F/5 or F/6 which need great precision to fall within premissible values. Hence if we get very precise value then object is a plate of ½ or if the precise value is on little higher side then it is plate of ¼. If the result value range is not precise value than it is a gray glass disk or a polarizing plate.

B) The refractive indexes of quartz and calcite are no = 1.544, ne = 1.553 and no = 1.658, ne = 1.486, respectively. Since a ¼ calcite plate having more refractive index so it is more thicker than a quartz. Because more refractive index means more denser the objecr and less refractive index means less denser the object.

C) Given

A left-polarized beam of o = 5893 Å is normally incident on a calcite plate of / 2 for which no = 1.65836 and n = 1.48641

So thickness of the plate = 5893 x 10^-8/ 4* (no-n)

= 5893 x 10^-8/ 4* (1.65836-1.48641)

= 5893 x 10^-8/ 4*0.17195

= 0.000857 mm

Here we have to put the 2 identical quarter wave plates just one after the another, then we will have a half-wave plate and the important point is that the phase difference will be . This type of plate will change the orientation of linearly polarized wave (input). Hnec it is clear that the emerging beam has right-circular polarization.
