Question

A) The drawing shows four different situations in which a light ray is traveling from one medium into another. Without doing any calculations, but taking note of the relative sizes of the angles of incidence and refraction, decide which situation shows a refraction that is physically possible.

B) A ray of light originates in medium A and is incident upon medium B. For which one of the following pairs of indices of refraction for A and B is total internal reflection NOT Possible? (Hint: you may be tempted to do calculations. However, calculation is Not needed to answer this question.)

nA = 1.12, nB = 1.06

nA = 1.28, nB = 1.36

nA = 1.36, nB = 1.00

nA = 2.54, nB = 1.63

nA = 1.26, nB = 1.15

1)

nA = 1.12, nB = 1.06

2)

nA = 1.28, nB = 1.36

3)

nA = 1.36, nB = 1.00

4)

nA = 2.54, nB = 1.63

5)

nA = 1.26, nB = 1.15

Explanation / Answer

FOr A figure is missing. I am answering. B.

The option is 2is rhe answer because for total internal rdflection to occur, the ray shiuld incicident from denser to rarrer.. In option t 2, na=1.28,nb=1.36 so na<nb.

SO ray is entering from rarrer to denser. So total internal rdflection ia not possible.
