What is Modern Physics? Discuss some of the discoveries that led to the development of modern physics.
What is special relativity?
What is general relativity?
Discuss the postulates of relativity.
What is the consistent law principle?
According to relativity describe how a falling object looks to an observer in a windowless bus.
According to relativity describe how a falling object looks to an observer outside the bus.
What is the constancy of speed principle?
List three outcomes of the two principles mentioned above?
What is space-time?
Describe the space-time interaction with mass.
Describe the interaction of mass with space-time.
Explanation / Answer
Modern physics: these are the ideas, which proved the earlier accepted ideas wrong and let to better, detailed, precise understanding of elementry particles, as macro universe was completely and nicely described by Newtons laws etc.
Some major discoveries in 19 and 20th century were :
Maxwell's Electromagnetic Equations: unifying optics and Electomagnetism
Max Planck's black body radiation : quanta of energy.
Einstein's photoelectric effect : quanta of light(photon).
de Broglie: wave particle duality: each particle has a wave nature.
Schroedinger,Dirac, born: Quantum Theory
Einstein's special,general theory of relativity.
Special relativity deals with speed of particles close to speed of light and lorentz transformations.
General relativity deals with geometry of space and its link with time, states inertial and gravitational mass is one and the same thing.
