Question
What is Motion?Solve the following problems. Show all your work. Remember to include the correct units.
1. A student practicing for a track meet ran 250 m in 30 sec.
a. What was her average speed?
b. If on the following day she ran 300 m in 30 sec, by how much did her speed increase?
2. A car traveled 1025 km from El Paso to Dallas in 13.5 hour. What was its average velocity?
3. How fast was a plane flying if it traveled 400 km in 30 minutes?
4. A student walks 10 blocks to a computer store (Assume all the blocks are equal length.)
a. How long will it take him to reach the computer store if he walks 3 blocks in 2 minutes?
b. What is the average velocity?
5. If the average speed a car is 45km/hr, how far can it travel in 40 minutes?
6. The speed of light is 3 X 10 to 8th m/sec. How long does it take light to travel the 149 X 10 to 9th m distance from the sun to the earth?
7. A driver starts his parked car and within 5 seconds reaches a velocity of 54 km/hr as he travels east. What is his acceleration?
8. Falling objects drop with an average acceleration of 9.8 m/sec/sec/ or 9.8 m/sec to second. If an object falls from a tall building, how long will it take before it reaches a speed of 49 m/sec?
Explanation / Answer
Motion is change of location or position of an object with respect to time. Change in motion is the result of an applied force. Motion is typically described in terms of velocity also seen as speed, acceleration, displacement, and time. 1. a . 250/30 = 8.33 ms-1 b. 300/30 = 10 ms-1 increase = 2.77 ms-1 2. 1025/ 13.5 = 75.92 km/h = 76 km/h 3. speed = 400/30/60 = 400/0.5 = 800 km/h 4. Take the lenght of a block as L 3 L - 2 min 10L - (2/3L)*10L = 6.66 mins 5. 45 Km - 1hr= 60 mins 60 mins - > 45 km 40 mins - >45/60 *40 = 30 km 6. distance = 149*10^9 / 3*10^8 = 49.66*10 = 496.6 s 7.accelaration = 54- 0 /5/60 ( devided by 60 to make it hours) = 54*12 = 648 ms-2 8. v=u+at 49 = 0 +9.8 t t= 49/9.8 = 5 secs hope this helps speed = distance/time velocity = displacement / time I devided by 60 to be consistent with units that is very important good luck
