Question
It is desired to fabricate a unidirectional composite plate using liquid composite molding (LCM) process. This accomplished by placing well-ordered and uniformly distributed continuous fibers in a rectangular mold 0.2 m (long) x 0.1 m (wide) x 0.01 m (thick), and injecting resin into the system from one end of the mold cavity, as shown below Resin Injection Port The following parameters are given: Volume fraction of fibers Vf-54% Fiber diameter df = 10 m Resin viscosity 400 cP injection pressure = dp Kozney constant K-0.7 200 k Pa In the presence of the fibers, calculate the available volume in the mold cavity to be filled by the injected resin. (c)Explanation / Answer
c) Total volume of mould V= LxBxt= 0.2x0.1x0.01= 0.0002 m3
Volume fraction of fibers= 54 %
Hence volume occupied by fibers Vf= 0.54x0.0002= 0.000108 m3
Therefore available volume in mould cavity for resin is
Vm= V-Vf= 0.0002-0.000108=0.000092 m3
