Explanation / Answer

1) According to the plate tectonics theory, the lithosphere of earth is divided in to seven major, six to seven mid range and many minor plates. These plates move at rates of 5 to 10cm per year. When these plates interact with one another, they cause earth quakes, volcanic activity, form mountains, fracture continents and form oceans. The continents are fixed on the plates and the continents drift passively with the plates.
