What Is a Data Warehouse?

In simple terms, a data warehouse (DW) is a pool o f data produced to support decision making; it is also a repository of current and historical data of potential interest to managers throughout the organization. Data are usually structured to be available in a form ready for analytical processing activities (i.e., online analytical processing [OLAP], data mining, querying, reporting, and other decision support applications). A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, nonvolatile collection of data in support of management’s decision-making process.

data mining is a term used to describe discovering or “mining” knowledge

from large amounts of data. Technically speaking, data mining is a process that uses statistical, mathematical, and artificial intelligence techniques to extract and identify useful information and subsequent knowledge (or patterns) from large sets o f data.

The following are the major characteristics and objectives o f data mining:

• Data are often buried deep within very large databases, which sometimes contain data from several years. In many cases, the data are cleansed and consolidated into a data warehouse. Data may be presented in a variety of formats (see Technology Insights 5.1 for a brief taxonomy o f data).

Explanation / Answer

Ans.)

Data Warehousing can be described as a process to suport decision making and deals with a pool of current and historical data, and acts as a repository to the potential interest of managers in any organisation. As and when required, the data is structured to be available for analytical processing activities like, OLAP, data mining, querying, reporting and other decison supporting activities. Thus, a data warehouse is a collection of nonvolatile subject oriented data, which is also subject oriented and time variant, helps in management decision making process.

Data Mining, on the other hand, is a procedure of extracting information from huge sets of data. In other words, we can say that data mining is mining knowledge from data. It uses various techniques like statistical or mathematical techniques and artificial intelligence, to extract the data and identify the required information from the large sets of data.

Data Mining is the process of cleansing and consolidating the data in the Data Warehouse which may contain a huge data of several years. The process include :
