Question
A tourist being chased by an angry bear is running in a straight line toward hs car at a speed of 4.0 m/s. The car is a distance d away. The bear is 26 m behind the tourist and running at 6.0 m/s. The tourist reaches the car safely. Need to know: maximum possible value for d.
Please give me a written explanation of the steps. I already know:
Avg speed = displacement/elapsed time
26m/2s = 13m/s
4m/s x 13 s = 52 meters The max possible value for d is 52 meters.
I don't understand how to do the steps in between all that. How do i set up the problems from the beginning?
Explanation / Answer
for maximum d :he reaches the car just before bear reaches him let in time t he reaches his car by traveling a distance of d m in this same time bear has to travel 26+d m d = 4*t ---->for the tourist 26+d = 6*t --->for the bear 26 = 6t-4t = 2t t = 13 s d = 4*13 = 52 m
