Question
A total of 100 premed UTD students have enrolled in the "O Chem" course. None of the students were ill at the beginning of the school year. On September 30th, five students reported having gastroenteritis. On October 1, all were medically diagnosed with gastroenteritis however, by October 4th they all had recovered. On October 14, three more students developed signs and symptoms of gastroenteritis. By October 15th, they all had confirmed medical diagnosis of gastroenteritis. Similar to previous students, all three students fully recovered within three days. This is a new strain of bacteria and once a person recovers from the disease, he/she develops full immunity to the disease. Therefore, a person cannot get gastroenteritis more than once. (10 points) (Show your work and explanation) 2. A: Calculate the incidence of gastroenteritis on October 1st. B: Calculate the incidence of gastroenteritis in the class on October 30thExplanation / Answer
A.
None of the students were ill at the beginning of the school year.
On October 1st, 5 students were diagnosed with gastroenteritis. So, number of new cases after the beginning of the school year till October 1 is 5.
So, incidence of gastroenteritis is 5 on October 1st.
B.
Again, on October 15, 3 more students were diagnosed with gastroenteritis. As, the disease will not occur on the same student more than once, number of new cases after the beginning of the school year till October 30 is 5+3 = 8.
So, incidence of gastroenteritis is 8 on October 30th.
