Question

Debbie is playing with two rubber balls; ball A has a mass of 0.640kg and ball B has a mass of 0.800 kg.
She rolls ball A with a speed of 3.30 m/s and it collides head-on with ball B which is initially at rest.
Find the speed and direction of each ball after the collision when the collision is perfectly elastic and the direction of ball A moving initially is positive.

Find velocity of ball B.
(Answer in m/s)

Explanation / Answer

since it is a elastic collision v2-v1=u1-u2 =>v2-v1=3-0 =>v2-v1=3 =>v1=v2-3 ---(1) m1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2 =>0.64*3.3 + 0 = 0.64v1 + 0.8v2 ---(2) substituting eq (1) in eq(2) we get =>0.64(v2-3) +0.8v2 = 0.64*3.3 =>1.44v2 = 0.64*6.3 =>v2=2.8m/sec velocity of ball B is 2.8m/s in +ve direction => v1 = -0.2 =>velocity of ball A is 0.2m/sec in -ve direction
