Question
A car misses a turn and sinks into a shallow lake to a depth of 10.3 m.(A) If the area of the car door is 0.68 m2, what is the force exerted on the outside of the door by the water? Note: 1 atm = 101.325 kPa.
(B) What is the force exerted on the inside of the door by the air, assuming the inside of the car is at atmospheric pressure? Think about what the occupant should do to get the door open.
Explanation / Answer
A) the force exerted on the car door is F = P*A where P = pressure at the surface of the door due to overhead water. and A = area of the car door => F = (1000*9.81*10.3 + 101325 )*0.68 = 136170.24 N B) now the force on the inside of the door is F = 101325*0.68 = 68901 N now the occupant should push the door in order to open the door as the pressure outside is higher.
