Question
<p>A horizontal rectangular surface has dimensions 3.10 cm by 3.15 cm and is in a uniform magnetic field that is directed at an angle of 28.0 degrees above the horizontal.</p><div class="partText">What must the magnitude of the magnetic field be in order to produce a flux of <span>4.10×10−4</span> <img src="http://session.masteringphysics.com/render?units=Wb" alt="Wb" align="middle" /> through the surface?</div>
Explanation / Answer
Flux is found by BAcos where is the angle between the mag field and the area VECTOR.
For a horizontal rectangular surfcae, the area vector points UP ( or down, whichever ). So if the mag field is 28 above the horizontal, and the angle we need is with respect to the area vector ( up ) then we need
90 - 28 = 62 degrees.
Now, to plug in:
= BAcos
4.1e-4 = B( .0310 X .0315 )cos62
B = 0.894 T
