Question
There is a statement in my book about catabolic pathways.
"Some metabolic pathways release energy by breaking down complex molecules to simpler compounds. These degradative processes are called catabolic pathways, or breakdown pathways. A major pathway of catabolism is cellular respiration, in which the sugar glucose and other organic fuels are broken down in the presence of oxygen to carbon dioxide and water. Energy stored in the organic molecules becomes available to do the work of the cell, such as ciliary beating or membrane transport."
I want to know what "Energy stored" exactly means, is it the energy that is released as the result of catabolism or is it the energy already present and has nothing to do with catabolism.
Thanks.
Explanation / Answer
Energy stored exactly means the energy that is released as the result of catabolism.
This energy is nothing but the ATP and NADPH formed during cellular respiration. The energy released during cellular respiration is stored in the form of ATP and NADPH.
This energy is stored and utilized for normal functions of the cell like ciliary beating or membrane transport.
