Question
A juggler demonstrates his abilities by keeping a 2.3-kg pipe wrench, a 1.5-kg hatchet, and a 1.0-kg hammer flying through the air above his head. The white circles on the graph represent the positions of the center of mass of each of the flying objects at one instant. What are the x and y coordinates of the center of mass for the system of these three objects?I couldn't copy and paste the graph but it's on the website: http://www.ahsd.org/science/stroyan/pl2/ch7/ch7wq/p2ch7wq6.htm
The answers are 0.46m and 0.47m but I have no clue how to get that answer. Please help!
Explanation / Answer
As shown in the diagram, C.G. of different objects are Pipe wrench (x1, y1) = (0.1 m, 0.3 m) Hatchet (x2, y2) = (0.6 m, 0.9 m) Hammer (x3, y3) = (1.1 m, 0.20 m) X coordinate C.G. of system is given by X = (m1 x1 + m2 x2 + m3 x3) / (m1 + m2 + m3) = (2.3 * 0.1 + 1.5 * 0.6 + 1.0 * 1.1) / (2.3 + 1.5 + 1.0) = 0.464 m Y coordinate C.G. of system is given by Y = (m1 y1 + m2 y2 + m3 y3) / (m1 + m2 + m3) = (2.3 * 0.3 + 1.5 * 0.9 + 1.0 * 0.20) / (2.3 + 1.5 + 1.0) = 0.467 m (X, Y) ˜ (0.46 m, 0.47 m) = (2.3 * 0.3 + 1.5 * 0.9 + 1.0 * 0.20) / (2.3 + 1.5 + 1.0) = 0.467 m (X, Y) ˜ (0.46 m, 0.47 m)Related Questions
