Question
The force shown in the force vs. time diagram in the figure acts on a 1.5kg object. Find (a) the impulse of the force, (b) the final velocity of the object if it is initially at rest, and (c) the final velocity of the object if it is initially moving along the x-axis with a velocity of -2.0m/s.
I need help solving for (b) and (c)
The force shown in the force vs. time diagram in the figure acts on a 1.5kg object. Find (a) the impulse of the force, (b) the final velocity of the object if it is initially at rest, and (c) the final velocity of the object if it is initially moving along the x-axis with a velocity of -2.0m/s. I need help solving for (b) and (c)Explanation / Answer
since an impulse is a change in momentum, you can use the impulse calculated from (a) to get the velocities for (b) and (c).
a)
J = Ft
= 2*3 + .5 * 2*2
=6+2 = 8J
b/c)J = mv
8J = 1.5kg *v
v = 5.33333 m/s
Since the change in velocity is 5.3333 m/s, the final veloctity if the object starts at rest is 5.333 m/s and if the object is originally moving at -2 m/s, the final velocity is 3.3333 m/s.
