Question
2) Describe at least three principle events that occur in the ER with regard to protein production and/or modifications? If there was a mutation in the enzyme/step what would result. You can choose just one of the three to explain the resulting defect in this process. 3) What are the criteria that define a bona fide sorting signal? Provide a specific example of a sorting signal and cellular location to illustrate your answer 4) Is it a reasonable to say that exocytosis and endocytosis are "different sides of the same coin?" Either support or refute this statement by describing the processes (exo- and endo-) and discuss 3-4 of the key molecules involved in either or both processesExplanation / Answer
Transmembrane protein and water soluble protein are captured by ER from cytosol. The import of proteins into the ER is done through co-translational process. The ribosome which synthesizes the protein is directly attached to the ER membrane making it rough ER. Ribosomes attached to the cytosolic side of the ER membrane synthesise protein which are concurrently translocated into the ER, whereas free ribosomes, synthesize proteins which are encoded by the nuclear genome.
Bona fide endocytic recycling signal function in both proximal and distal locations. They control the endocytic trafficking of dopamine receptor
In exocytosis, vescicles fuse with the plasma membrane and release their content on the exterior of the cell whereas in endocytosis, a particle is captured from outside the cell by engulfing it with the cell membrane, and bringing it into the cell. Endocytosis consist of pinocytosis, phagocytosis, and receptor-mediated endocytosis
