Question

18.___A positevely charged rod is brought near, but not touching the left side of a neutral sphere.

19.___ a plastic rod is charged positevely by rubbing it with felt. The felt is then touched to a neutral sphere and later removed.

20.___A posively charged rod is brought near a neutral sphere, the sphere is charged by induction, and the rod is taken away.

21.___a sphere is charged by conduction with a positive rod.

22.___A negatively charged rod is brought near but not touching the right side of a nuetral sphere.

23.__A positevely charged rod is brought near the right side of a sphere that was already positevely charged.

24.___a person holding a metal rod touches it to a positevely charged sphere.

Explanation / Answer

18(B) likes repel so the + charged rod from the left will induce a dipole with negative close to the rod and positive away from the charged rod. 19(C) The neutral sphere will pick up some of the positive charge and then the positive charge will distribute itself all around the sphere due to repulsion. 20 (D) If some of the + charge induced on the sphere leaves the sphere (either by contact or by ionizing the air) the sphere will have excess negative charge when the rod is taken away. 21 (C) sphere shares the positive charge with the positive rod. 22 (B) the charged rod will separate charge on the neutral sphere so + on the right, - on the left. 23 (A) there will be more positive on the left and less positive on the right. Depending on how charged the rod is, we will see A or C. C if the sphere had a lot of charge and the rod had hardly any. 24 (E) the person is touching the ground and will take almost all the excess charge away from the charged sphere
