Question

A thief is trying to escape from a parking garage after completing a robbery, and the thief’s car is speeding (v = 11 m/s) toward the door of the parking garage (Figure below). When the thief is L = 12 m from the door a police officer flips a switch to close the garage door. The door starts at a height of 4.5 m and moves downward at 0.4 m/s. If the thief’s car is 1.4 m tall, will the thief escape? (Find the height of the door above the ground).

Please, show all of your work. This means show step by step how you arrived at your answer(s). Include any equations or formulas used to arrive at the answer(s). Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

time taken bycar to reach at garage door (t) = distance/speed

t = 12m/11m/s = 1.0909 s

in 1.0909 sec distance travel by door = speed*time

= 0.4 m/s * 1.0909 = 0.4363 m

space needed to ecscape the garage = 1.4m

space is availabe at the time of escape = 4.5 m - 0.4363 m = 4.0637 m

so thief will escape gargae.
