Question
A thermodynamic system undergoes a cyclic process as shown in the figure . The cycle consists of two closed loops, loop I and loop II.IMAGE: http://session.masteringphysics.com/problemAsset/1261156/2/YF-19-17.jpg
(A)Over one complete cycle, does the system do positive or negative work?
(B)In the loop I, is the net work done by the system positive or negative?
(C)In the loop II, is the net work done by the system positive or negative?
(D)Over one complete cycle, does heat flow into or out of the system?
(E)In the loop I, does heat flow into or out of the system?
(F)In the loop II, does heat flow into or out of the system?
Explanation / Answer
a) A clockwise cycle means positive work and an anticlockwise one means negative work.
Since area of clockwise cycle is more, the system does positive work.
b) the net work done by the system is positive in loop 1 since cycle is clockwise.
c) the net work done by the system is negative in loop 2 since cycle is anti-clockwise.
d)Since change in internal energy is 0 in a cycle, therefore heat flows into a system since net work done by cycle is positive.(Q=U+W)
e)Heat flows into the system..
f) Heat flows out of the system.
