Question
A very long, thin rod carries electric charge with the linear density 38.0 nC/m. It lies along the x axis and moves in the x direction at a speed of 15.0 Mm/s.
(a) Find the electric field the rod creates at the point (0, 20.0 cm, 0). Magnitude: 3.416885784E3 N/C
(b) Find the magnetic field it creates at the same point. Magnitude: 5.7e-7 T
(c) Find the force exerted on an electron at this point, moving with a velocity of 240 î Mm/s. Magnitude: in N
The magnitudes for a and b are correct, but I need help with c.
Explanation / Answer
c) magnetic F = qvB
= 1.6e-19*240e6*5.7e-7
= 2.19*10^-17 N
Electrostatic F = qE = 1.6e-19*3.4169e3
= 5.467*10^-16 N
net force = sqrt(54.67^2+2.19^2) *10^-16
= 54.71*10^-16 N
