Question
A rope connects boat A to boat B. Boat A starts from rest and accelerates to a speed of 9.5 m/s in a time t = 47 s. The mass of boat B is 540 kg. Assuming a constant frictional force of 230 N acts on boat B, what is the magnitude of the tension in the rope that connects the boats during the time that boat A is accelerating?I know the components will be set up as:
Fn=mg (on the Y-axis)
T=ma + Fk (on the X-axis)
And I know T=340, but I'm just a little confused on how to plug in the values given, specifically the frictional force of 230 N
Explanation / Answer
T = ma+Fk Fk = 230 N a = 9.5/47 = 0.2 m/s2 m = 540kg so, T = 540*0.2 + 230 = 339.14N
