Question
a cart with a mass of m1=600g collides and sticks wih another cart of mass m2=350g. m1 velocity is +1.5 m/s(to the right) and that of m2=-2.4 m/s( to the left).a) what type of collision is this and what is the velocity of the two cars after the collision?
b) how much kinetic energy is lost t heat and other forms ?
Explanation / Answer
a) Its an inelastic collision => m1u1 + m2u2 = (m1 + m2)V => 600*1.5 + 350*(-2.4) = 950 V => V = 0.063 m/s....to the right b) K.E lost = K.E(initial) - K.E(final) = (1/2)*0.6*1.5^2 + (1/2)*0.35*2.4^2 - (1/2)*0.950*0.063^2 = 1.68 Joules
