Question

A large balloon of mass 228 kg is filled with helium gas until its volume is 328 m3. Assume the density of air is 1.29 kg/m3 and the density of helium is 0.179 kg/m3.

(b) Calculate the buoyant force acting on the balloon.** 4146.58 N**
(c) Find the net force on the balloon and determine whether the balloon will rise or fall after it is released.___N
(d) What maximum additional mass can the balloon support in equilibrium? __kg
(f) What limits the height to which the balloon can rise? (Select all that apply..)
pressure of the surrounding air
density of the surrounding air
the hemisphere in which the balloon is located
temperature of the surrounding air

Explanation / Answer

the buoyant force acting on the balloon = 328*1.29*9.8 = 4146.576 N

the net force on the balloon = 4146.576 - 224*9.8 - 328*0.179*9.8

= 4146.576-2770.5776

=1375.9984 N upwards

the additional mass that the balloo can carry = 1375.9984/9.8

= 140.408 kg
