Question
PLEASE HELP ME!!
A daredevil plans to bungee jump from a balloon 59.0 m above a carnival midway. He will use a uniform elastic cord, tied to a harness around his body, to stop his fall at a point 10.0 m above the ground. Model his body as a particle and the cord as having negligible mass and obeying Hooke's law. In a preliminary test, hanging at rest from a 5.00 m length of the cord, he finds that his body weight stretches it by 1.60 m. He will drop from rest at the point where the top end of a longer section of the cord is attached to the stationary balloon.
Explanation / Answer
since a 5 m chord stretches by 1.6 m due to his weight,
=> 1 meter stretches by 0.32 and it becomes a length of 1.32 m
(a) let x be the original length required
then 1.32*x = 49 (his fall should stop 1om above the ground)
=> x = 37.121 m
(b) Before the chord starts stretching, he will always experience the gravitational acceleration,g = 9.8 m/s2. after the chord starts stretching the acceleration will start to decrease.
so maximum acceleration he experiences is 9.8 m/s2
