Question
Figure 1 = a pulley on top of triangle...one block to left of the pulley is2kg .... triangle = 30 degree angle....second block = m
A) Assume that all surfaces in the figure are frictionless. What value should have so the masses won't accelerate? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
B) Now take mk=0.10 on all surfaces andm=0.50kg. What will be the acceleration of both masses? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
Explanation / Answer
Let the Tension in the thread connecting both masses be T and mass of block on left side of pulley be M and other mass is m ..............(A) So from balance of block (mass M) with thread .....we have T = Mg and from balance of block (mass m) with thread we have..... T = mgsin? .....so Mg = mgsin? ==> after plugging values we get .......m = 4kg............(B) now there is friction .............let acceleration if blocks be 'a' ................then we can write two equations............Mg - T = (M+m)a ------>(1).........and.....T - ?k*mgsin? = (M+m)a------->(2)..........adding (1) &(2) we get ........ Mg - ?k*mgsin? = 2(M+m)a...........after plugging values we get 'a' = 3.95 m/s2 ............(g= 10 m/s2 taken)
