Question

1.)Let: V = 0 at in?nity. Find the electric potential at p with coordi- nates (0, 0) . Answer in units of V 2.) Find the y-component of the electric ?eld at p by taking the appropriate partial derivative of the potential function from part 2. Answer in units of N/C 3.) Let: Point s be at position (0, 1). Find V s ? V p by integrating ?? E ? d?s over a straight line path between the two points. Answer in units of V Any help would be awesome I'm totally stuck!!! Explanation / Answer

you already solved for the x-component of the electric field at P but you cant seem to get the y component.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Let:

q1 = -9.1 C

q2 = -8.1 C

----------------------------------------------------------------

E1y = tan(1) E1x

And we can find tan(1) easily:

tan(1) = 1.7/3 = 0.56667

therefore

E1y = 0.56667 E1x <---------- (put E1x to find E1y)

------------------------------------------------------------------

E2y = tan(2) E2x

And we can find tan(2) easily:

tan(2) = 1.6/2.5 = 0.64

therefore

E2y = 0.64 E2x <---------- (put E2x to find E2y)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now we have E1y and E2y and we can find Ey:

Ey = E1y + E2y

Note that direction of the Ey is -y
