Question
HW3.4. Open-ended problem: A client has a property that she thinks contains clay minerals of sufficient quality and quantity that it may be possible to mine the clays, process them, and sell them commercially. She requests that you visit the property, obtain samples, determine the type of clay or clays present, and estimate the approximate quantity of clay available. With what you know so far from the first four chapters, (1) outline the field and laboratory procedures that you would use to find the clay type, and (2) outline the procedures you would use to find the quantity of the clay materials on the property. Note: we are more interested in your thought process and how you would incorporate what you have learned so far into developing a reasonable plan of action.Explanation / Answer
ANS::
as for given data
1) In field we can estimate the clay content by ensing it means we can touch it by fingers and we can feel the smoothness of the soil as diameter of soil is very less in in clays.
and we can say by seeing it. it looks in black colour as it contains montmorillonite mineral.
By labouratory method: we can estmiate it by hydrometer analysis which is a part of particle size distribution and by testing its specific garvity and void ratio.
2) In fields we can estimate the extent of clay by digging a bore hole and seeing the clay which is in black colour and exhibits swelling when we pour water on it due to the presence of montmorillonite.
