Question
19 of 24 Exercise 24.34 Constants v Part A A paral lal-plate capacitor has capacitance Co 7.70 pF when there is air between the plates. The separation between the plates is 2.00 What is the maximum magnitude of charge that can be placed on each plate if the electric field in the region between the plates is not to exceed 3.00x104 V/m? Express your answer with the appropriate units. QValue Units Submit v Part B A dielectric with K 2.90 is inserted beween the plates of the capacitor, completely filling the volume between the plates. Now what is the maximum magnitude of charge on each plate if the electric field between the plates is not to exceed 3.00 10 V/m ? Express your answer with the a Value Units SubmitExplanation / Answer
We know that Charge on capacitor is given by:
Q = C*V
Electric field is given by:
E = V/d, So
V = E*d
Q = C*E*d
Now given that
E = 3*10^4 V/m
C = 7.70*10^-12 F
d = 2.00 mm = 2*10^-3 m
So,
Q = 7.70*10^-12*3.00*10^4*2.00*10^-3
Q = 4.62*10^-10 C
Part B.
when dielectric is inserted, new capacitance will be given by
C1 = k*C
So Now
Q1 = C1*E*d = k*C*E*d
Q1 = k*Q
Q1 = 2.90*4.62*10^-10
Q1 = 13.4*10^-10 C
