Question

Jumper cables are connected from a fresh battery in one car to charge a dead battery in another car. The figure below shows the circuit diagram for this situation. While the cables are connected, the ignition switch of the car with the dead battery is closed and the starter is activated to start the engine. (Let R 1.4512 and Rs-0.04 .) 0.01 | Rs Starter 12V Dead battery battery switch (a) Detemine the current in the starter 241.92 A downward (b) Determine the current in the dead battery. 243.51 Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. A upward

Explanation / Answer

Voltage drop across starter Rs = 241.92 * 0.04 = 9.6768 V

As it is in parallel connection with dead battery, therefore there would same potential drop across the combination. As the battery is dead, therefore there would be no initial potential across it. Hence current flowing through the dead battery = voltage/resistance = 9.6768/1.45 = 6.674 A.
