Question

MESSAGE MY INSTRUCTOR FULL SCREEN PRINTER VERSION BACK NEXT Chapter 25, Problem 16 Plot 1 in Figure (a) gives the charge q that can be stored on capacitor 1 versus the electric potential V set up across it. The vertical scale is set by qs 32 pC, and the horizontal scale is set by Vs 4.0 V. Plots 2 and 3 are similar plots for capacitors 2 and 3, respectively. Figure (b) shows a circuit with those three capacitors and a 8.9 V battery. What is the charge stored on capacitor 2 in that circuit? gs 2 V (V)

Explanation / Answer

Q = C V

so slope of q vs V curve will give us the capacitance.

C1 = (6/8)(32uC) / (4) = 6 uF

C2 = (32 x0.5) / 4 = 4uF

C3 = (32 x 0.25) / 4 = 2 uF

C2 and C3 are in parallel, C23 = C2 + C3 = 6 uF

V2 = V3 = 8.9/2 Volt

U = C V^2 / 2

U = (4 x 10^-6) (8.9/2)^2 / 2 = 3.96 x 10^-5 J
