Question
MEDIUM 1 - water balloons1. What are the characteristics of this medium? its flexible and elastic, stretchy. its rather compressible and low bulk modules 2. What would happen to your hand when holding water balloon after the balloon was struck with a hammer? (assume it does not break) assuming that it didnt break, it would absorb a majority of the force of the hammer so you wouldnt feel it on your hand.3. Is this medium good for energy propagation, prove it through supporting references. (pg number) no its not because its flexible and not stiff enough. the stiffer the object, the higher the propagation speed and vice versa
Explanation / Answer
1) yes, it is flexible and elastic, stretchy. Water balloons have a low bulk modules, that is why we can compress it easily.
2) Yes, it would absorb a majority of the force of the hammer. when we hit hammer on water balloon, the energy of hammer transeferd to water molecules then these water molecules diffuses in horizontaly which in turn change the shape of water balloon however after diffusiing water balloon restore original shape.
3) This medium is good for thermal energy propagation. since it is filled with water, which is a good source of heat.
for example. when we put watere balloon on burning candle, thin latex balloon allows the heat to pass through very quickly and warm the water. As the water closest to the flame heats up, it begins to rise and cooler water replaces it at the bottom of the balloon. This cooler water then soaks up more heat and the process repeats itself. In fact, the exchange of water happens so often that it keeps the balloon from popping , until the heat of the flame is greater than the water’s ability to conduct heat away from the thin latex and the balloon pop.
