Question

PHYSICS Kinematics 25.While doing an experiment, Tom droos a ball cut of a window 2.3 meters above the ground. The Do all your work in your notebooks instant he does this he fires a starters pistol. Jerry sees the ball hit the ground at the instant he hears the pistols shot. The speed of pistol's sound is 334 m/s -it is constant and wil not change. a. How long did it take for Tom's ball to reach the ground? b. How far away was Jerry standing? BANG I sce the ball hit the ground at the scme time I hegr the

Explanation / Answer

Given : d = 2.3 m ; v = 334 m/s

Solution :

Note : Time required for ball to reach the ground = Time required for sound to reach.

(a) As this is a free fall , hence time required for the ball to reach the ground is given by :

d = (1/2)gt2

t = [2d/g]1/2

= [(2×2.3)/(9.81)]1/2

= 0.685 s

(b)

Let d be the distance of Jerry

So v = d/t

334 m/s = d/(0.685 s)

d = 228.79 m
