Question
Q1) Mass of wheel A is 4 kg and is fitted on the arm AO which has a mass of 3kg. The mass center of the arm is G. Radius of gyration of the arm about O is 0.35 m. The assembly is released from rest in the horizontal position and the wheel A rolls without slipping.
a) Find the velocity of the center of wheel A when it reaches A’. Clearly state any assumptions used.
b) If the wheel A is replaced with a disc of same mass and radius, how does it affect the solution? Explain clearly.
c) Discuss the effects of the following on the velocity of mass center of A i) Increasing the mass of OA ii) Increasing the mass of wheel A
Explanation / Answer
a) A figure is needed to better understand the question.
b)Since the moment of inertia of disc is less than a wheel(only rim is considered), the velocity at any fixed point will be more as compared to that of wheel(only rim is considered).
c) i)Increasing the mass of OA cannot be explained as there is no clear figure.
ii)Increasing mass of wheel A will increase the moment of inertia of body, hence the velocity at any fixed point A' will be less as compared to the wheel in question.
