Question

A solid, insulating sphere of radius a has a uniform charge density throughout its volume and a total charge of Q. Concentric with this sphere is an uncharged, conducting hollow sphere whose inner and outer radii are b and c as shown in the figure below. We wish to understand completely the charges and electric fields at all locations. (Use the following as necessary Q, eo, a, b, c and r. Do not substitute nurmerical values; use variables only.) (a) Find the charge contained within a sphere of radiusr

Explanation / Answer

In the inner sphere of radius a, the total charge is distributed all over the sphere. Whereas in case of inner part of bigger sphere the total charge of Q is distributed along the surface only. So the charge distribution and charge density is more than that of the inner sphere of radius 'a'. Whereas at the outer surface the radius is more so charge distribution and charge density is less at that surface.
