Question

A flow nozzle is a device for measuring the flow rate in a pipe. This particular nozzle is to be used to measure low-speed air flow for which compressibility may be neglected. During operation, the pressure p1 and p2 are recorded, as well as upstream temperature, T1. Find the mass flow rate in terms of ?p=p2-p1 and T1, the gas constant for air, and device diameter D1 and D2. Assume the flow is inviscid. Will the actual flow be more or less than the predicted flow? Why?

Explanation / Answer

we can apply mass balance equ hoation so that A1v1=A2V2 since flow is incompressible. so we can find relation between velocities V1 and V2. now applying bernoulli's equation such that summation of kinetic head, pressure head and potential head before nozzle is equal to summation of these in case of flow through nozzle. potential head can be cancel since both are in same line. these 2 equation gives satisfactory relation to find flow rate means we can find relation when we take P1 and P2 in the same side.

there is always loss due to friction, heat generation etc when fluid flow through pipes. since nozzle efficiency equals to ratio of actual flow to theoratical flow and efficincy always something less than 1, so actual flow always less than theoratical concept.
