Question
Two blocks each of mass m1 and m2 are connected by an inextensible string, as shown in the gure.
The second mass is 5 times the first, i.e. m2 = 5m1. The coecients of static and kinetic friction
between the inclined plane and the block are s and k. Both the blocks are initially at rest and the
spring is in an undeformed state. What is the maximum value of s which allows the motion of the
blocks when the system is released from rest. Assuming that s is less than this maximum value, and
the maximum extension in the spring once the system is released from rest
Explanation / Answer
for equlibrium 5mg = mgsintheta + smgcostheta
or s = (5-costheta)/sintheta
