Question
A well-insulated 400 liter rigid tank initially contains air at 27 C and 250 kPa. A valve is opened allowing half of the mass of the air to escape at which point the valve is closed. Assume contents leaving tank have same properties as initial tank contents during entire discharge process. Re-do the calculation for Problem 1 assuming that the contents leaving the tank have AVERAGED properties between those of the initial tank contents & the final tank contents. Does this change your answer a lot or a little? Which method do you think is more accurate reflection of what is actually happening during the discharge process? Why?Explanation / Answer
The look at the energy content of the steam in and out of the turbine and the energy content in and out of the fluid being compressed. To do a complete balance, you would need to also allow for any energy losses to cooling systems for lube oil and bearings.
