Question
A weight, W, of unknown magnitude is suspended by three cables as shown in the figure. Two of the cables, DB and DC, have been instrumented with strain gages, which can measure the current strain (related to deformation) in cables DB and DC. Using these strain measurements, a field engineer has calculated the tension forces in the two cables to be 100 lbs in cable DB and 130 lbs in cable DC. Your job is to determine the force in cable DA and also the amount of weight, W, the system is currently carrying.
Explanation / Answer
net force Fnet X=-100 cos 45 +130 * 12/13-Fa Fnet Y =100 sin 45 +130 *5/13 -w system is in eqquilibrium hence Fa=49.29 lbs W=120.71 lbs
