Applications that use Linear Block codesare: (1) data that has been digitally recorded to a mediasuch as tape, disc, and solid state memory; (2) digital data thatis transmitted by radio waves to a receiver, e.g., MarsExplorer; and (3) digital data that is transmitted by opticalfiber to a receiver, e.g. Ethernet. 2. The advantage of using Linear Block codes are theability to detect and possibly correct errors in reception causedby noise within the communication channel. The (7,4) codeyou've chosen can detect two bit errors within any given 7-bitsymbol and correct any 7-bit symbol that contains only 1 biterror. 3. The disadvantage of using Linear Block codesare that all codes result in "overhead" bits to increaseredundancy; in fixed bandwidth systems (radio broadcasting) thismeans that there is a resulting decrease in the amount ofinformation that can be transmitted to the recipient. The(7,4) code you've chosen transmits three "parity" bits (redundancy)for each four bit message (information bits). For example, ifI could only transmit 56 bits I could send 14, 4-bit messageswithout coding, but only 8, 4-bit messages using a (7,4)code. 4.
