Flash memory is a non-volatile form of memory - it doesn'tneed a power supply to maintain the data stored on it. While it hassome applications within PCs, including the BIOS chip, it is alsofound in devices such as MP3 players,USB memory sticks,memory cards for video game consoles, and the CompactFlash andSecure Digital cards used in many digital cameras. Computer storage in which information at a certain position is notalways available instantly because it is moving, as in an acousticdelay line or magnetic drum. Also known as dynamic memory. Computerstorage consisting of capacitively charged circuit elements whichmust be continually refreshed or recharged at regularintervals. Push-button switches, toggle switches, and electro-mechanicalrelays all have one thing in common: contacts. It's the metalcontacts that make and break the circuit and carry the current inswitches and relays. Because they are metal, contacts have mass.And since at least one of the contacts is on a movable strip ofmetal, it has springiness. Since contacts are designed to open andclose quickly, there is little resistance (damping) to theirmovement. Because the moving contacts have mass and springinesswith low damping they will be "bouncy" as they make and break. The Solution There are several ways to solve the problem of contact bounce (thatis, to "de-bounce" the input signal). Often the easiest way is tosimply get a piece of equipment that is designed to accept "bouncy"input. In the widget example above, you can buy special digitalcounters that are designed to accept switch input signals. They dothe de-bouncing internally. If that is not an option, then you willhave to do the debouncing yourself using either hardware orsoftware.
