Question
Scenario 1:
A small lake is capable of supporting both bluegill and small-mouth bass. These two bony fish species compete for similar food resources. The carrying capacity of this lake for bluegill (K1) is 1,500 and for bass (K2) is 500. After some careful measurement, we find that is 0.5 and the is 0.25. We stock the lake with 250 bluegill and 750 bass.
1. Just looking at these numbers, would you expect the bass population to increase or decrease from the population size stocked in the lake? Why?
2. Which species has the strongest limiting effect on the other?
Explanation / Answer
1. I think the bass population would be increased but population size is not matter here. The alpha value is higher so the bass population is stronger to eliminate it's competitor, bluegill population.
2. Bass population has stronger limiting effect on the bluegill population the limiting value that is alpha value is 0.5.
