Question

The elevator E has a mass of 3000 kg when fully loaded and is connected as shown to a counterweight of 1000 kg. Determine the power in kW delivered by the motor (a) when the elevator is moving down at a constant speed of 3 m/sec, (b) when it has an upward velocity of 3 m/sec and a deceleration of 0.5 m/sec2.

Explanation / Answer

(a) When it is moving at const velocity ==> 2T = 3000-1000 = 2000 ==> T = 1000 N ==> Power delivered = F * V = 1000 * 3 = 3000 W = 3 KW (b) When it is moving upward with const. decelration ==> 2000-2T = 3000*.5 ==> T = 250 N ==> Power delivered = F * V = 250 * 3 = 750 W = 0.75 KW
